Jesus Christ and the Trinity

One God. Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Understanding the Biblical Revelation of the Triune God

The Christian doctrine of the Trinity affirms that there is one true God, eternally existing as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It does not teach the existence of three gods, nor does it claim that the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are merely different names for the same Person. Although the word Trinity does not appear in Scripture, the doctrine summarises the Bible's testimony concerning God's unity, the deity of Jesus Christ, the deity of the Holy Spirit and the personal distinction between them.

This understanding must be established from the whole counsel of Scripture rather than from isolated expressions.

The One True God:
Hear, O Israel: The LORD Our God Is One LORD

Biblical faith begins with the unity of God.

The Old Testament repeatedly declares that there is one God and that no other deity is worthy of worship. Jesus reaffirmed this truth when asked about the greatest commandment.

The doctrine of the Trinity does not abandon biblical monotheism. It seeks to express the full testimony of Scripture concerning the one divine nature and the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Scriptures: Deuteronomy 6:4 | Isaiah 43:10-11 | Isaiah 45:5-6 | Mark 12:28-34 | 1 Corinthians 8:4-6

The Deity of Jesus Christ:
The Word Was God

The Son shares the divine nature.

John identifies the Word as God and subsequently declares that the Word became flesh. Thomas addresses the risen Jesus as his Lord and his God. Hebrews speaks of the Son in divine terms, while Jesus teaches that the Son must receive honour even as the Father.

These passages establish that the New Testament's presentation of Jesus cannot be reduced to that of a created messenger or exceptional human teacher.

Scriptures: John 1:1-14 | John 5:22-23 | John 20:28 | Colossians 2:9 | Hebrews 1:8-12

Greek word study: θεός (theos, G2316) - God or deity, with the precise referent determined by context.

The Person of the Holy Spirit:
The Spirit of Truth

Not merely an influence, but the divine Spirit.

Scripture describes the Holy Spirit as speaking, teaching, guiding, distributing gifts and being grieved. In Acts 5, Peter confronts Ananias concerning his deception of the Holy Ghost and describes the offence as lying to God.

Jesus distinguishes the Holy Spirit from Himself and the Father when promising the coming Comforter. The Holy Spirit's ministry is inseparable from the glorification of Jesus Christ and the application of God's saving work to believers.

Scriptures: Acts 5:3-4 | John 14:16-17 | John 16:13-15 | 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 | Ephesians 4:30

Greek word study: πνεῦμα (pneuma, G4151) - spirit, breath or wind. Its application to the Holy Spirit must be established from the context of each passage.

Three Persons Revealed Together:
The Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost

Personal distinction within the unity of God.

At the baptism of Jesus, the Son is present, the Spirit descends and the Father speaks from heaven. Following His resurrection, Jesus commands baptism in the singular name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost.

Paul's concluding blessing to the Corinthians likewise brings together the Lord Jesus Christ, God and the Holy Ghost. These passages do not provide a complete philosophical explanation of the Trinity. They do, however, establish important biblical foundations for the doctrine.

Scriptures: Matthew 3:16-17 | Matthew 28:18-20 | John 14:16-17 | 2 Corinthians 13:14

Why the Doctrine Matters:
Knowing the God Who Saves

The Trinity is central to the Christian gospel.

The Father sends the Son into the world. The Son accomplishes redemption through His death and resurrection. The Holy Spirit brings conviction, regeneration and spiritual life. These are not independent works of separate gods, but the saving work of the one true God.

A biblical understanding of the Trinity therefore protects the identity of Jesus Christ and the nature of salvation.

Scriptures: John 3:16-17 | John 14:26 | Ephesians 1:3-14 | Titus 3:4-7 | 1 Peter 1:2
